Paragraphs Should Have Points I wouldn’t say it is a “how-to” book, but this book has definitely helped me already in my writing.
Her thirty-one rules, offered with wit and delightful brevity, include the essential warning that though rules can help, bad rules hurt. Most wrifing handbooks are exactly what they most admonish: McCloskey is wary of rules, so instead she provides a list of heuristics. Two strengths of the book are that it’s funny my friends couldn’t believe I was laughing aloud at a style manual and that it gives a host of references to other books on writing.

economlcal Jun 03, John Driting rated it really liked it. I’ve gotten several papers back with red marks all over them. One of the best guides ever for writing clearly. It’s a quick, concise read with a wonderful sense of humor. This book provides ample opportunities to evaluate the reader’s writing.
If not, read Joseph Williams’ Style: Customers who bought this item also bought. Although some of her advice is a bit dated such as using two spaces after a period, question mark, or exclamation markmany are useful and would improve writing, if kept in mind.

I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in writing or finding writing difficult, even if they are not economists. Read, Out Loud The fact that many people believe something does not make it false—on the contrary, it is evidence that it is probably true. Laymen have often used cutthroat, exploitation, skyrocketing, and other such words to hazily explain, or often intentionally obscure, economic concepts.
Perhaps we millennials have become so accustomed to reading numerals in our text—even where econokical arguably doesn’t belong, like “inb4” and “stop h8″—that it seems positively baffling to us to not use a number when a number is obviously what you mean.
Chapter 25 Use Verbs Active Ones. Her ideas, such as answering ‘so what’ in every sentence of your research paper, or avoiding ‘elegant variation’, will help those who are so used to writing in high styles that they we obscure the message.
