Vuitar added some “new” guys to the moderator crew. All are longtime members that stepped up to the invite to help out by volunteering their time and effort to help the membership experience on TGP stay on the even keel. A special thank you to the ‘new’ guys that helping out. Mar 29, 1. Anyone have these and can comment?
My concern about book 2 guthri that it’s too “tapping” focused, a technique I’m really not interested in developing in any meaningful way. Would appreciate any feedback on these books however as I think he’s a most awesome instructor. Mar 29, 2. I have both books and when I bought the books I was in the exact same situation as you. I already had my foundation and wasnt interested in tapping.
I only browsed through them a couple of times and never used them anymore. I dont it’s a very useful book to learn how to play music. It’s more technique focused. Mar 29, 3. guhhrie
Mar 29, 4. Mar 29, 5. But it’s hard to recommend one after reading your Posts. I’m not sure if you are looking for some type of “Foundation” or not. Are you feeling comfortable with all the Scales you mentioned in your forst Post?
Creative Guitar 1: Cutting-Edge Techniques, Book & CD by Guthrie Govan
If so, I think that’s a pretty good foundation! Looked good, but I didn’t get a chance to sit down and really study it. Are you wanting Physical Techniques just not much Tapping? Or, are you looking for more of a study on Styles of some sort?

Cool Licks creaative Phrases? Depending on what Levels you want to work with, Don Mock has some great stuff out. I’d recommend his Materials.
Robben Ford has some really good stuff out. I have the first Download, and it’s really sweet! And the Book he often cites as an important read: Harmonic Experience by W. Also, there’s some good Technique stuff out. And it’s laid out and explained in a wonderful fashion. It’s just hard creagive tell which way you’re wanting to go, at this point. His 2nd book is mostly technique based and the 1st focuses more on theory and topics such as gutiar, metronome usage, how to practice effectively etc. When I met Guthrie last summer, he told me he thinks the first one is much better. I definitely agree with his assessment.
The 2nd book doesn’t really have too much tapping. It has a good mix of everything, including some useful sections on emulating other instruments, approaching new scales, outside playing, legato, alternate picking, economy picking, new chordal ideas etc. Both books are great. I creativr say the first one is just for beginners and intermediate players either.
Zero GMar 29, Mar 29, 7. Mar 29, 8. Okay, now I see. Yeah, Rhythm Studies are a great idea. Maybe ccreative “World Music” would hip gova to new Phrasings and Polyrhythms, etc. There are so many cool options there, that Guthtie let everyone else make suggestions as to what my be interesting.
They both use a lot of larger Interval ideas. I also really like Scott Henderson’s playing. Maybe studying some of their work? Splatt David Torn and Steve Kimock both spring immediately to mind. But, there are many just here on TGP. There’s just so much great work to explore, out there!
Butit sure is fun! Hope this helps some. Mar 29, 9. I like them more as inspiration than as something to really work through Will they expand your playing greatly? BTW the writing is really good. I love all his little jokes and lighthearted quips.
Mar 30, Yeah, I only know him from the youtube stuff, but I’m always struck by how self-effacing he is. Refreshing for a guy with such monstrous technical skills. Anyone else in his league if there is anyonewould almost certainly be full of themselves.
He seems crreative a natural born teacher.
Zero GMar 30, Good stuff, I tend to see scales too much as dots on the neck aka “Guitar Hero. Similarly, Govan talks here about ugthrie how any note sounds in relation to the root note of a C major scale. I have both books, and I recommend getting both of them since Guthrie had written them as one book, and the separation and titles weren’t of his choosing.
Guthrie Govan Creative Guitar 1 And 2
The books contain a wealth of information that should benefit both amateurs and professionals. He explains things well, and has a non-academic tone. Guthrie wrote the books with the struggling guitarist in mind, someone who already knew how to play but were stuck in a rut.
That was me, so I thought they contained everything I needed to know at the time. I’ve owned them for years, used them constantly, and I’m still learning new things all the time with these books as my guide. So yeah, I think they’re well worth checking out. Yngtchie BlacksteenMar 30, Mar 31, Zero GMar 31, Great advice on practicing and your last point is something I know to be true. Based your comments, Yngtchie’s and others, I’m certainly leaning towards picking up Govan’s books.
Haven’t pulled the trigger yet, not because I’m cheap, but because whatever materials I get I plan on using so I need to make sure they’re what I’m after. Also don’t want to over burden myself with too much info by getting a pile of stuff from too many instructors.
Also there’ve been what sound like good recommendations from other instructors in this thread. You must log in or sign up to reply here. Share This Page Tweet. Your name or email address: Do you already have an account?
